You’ve probably heard various celebrities talk about their personal trainers. However, what you might
not know is that personal trainers don’t only work with the rich and famous!
There are many personal trainers who offer their services to ordinary people, either as a standalone
business, or, often, as a service offered by a gym or fitness center. But even though there are personal
training services available to most people, many don’t know what they really do. So let’s take a look.
1. Assess Your Current Fitness Level
Everybody starts their fitness journey from a different place, and that means everyone needs a slightly
different approach.
The first thing your personal trainer will do is establish where you are when you first meet them. This
may include taking your weight and height measurements, measuring your body fat and observing you
doing various exercises.
2. Develop a Training Plan
One of the reasons personal trainers start by establishing your baseline fitness is so that they can
develop a realistic but still results driven plan.
If you haven’t exercised in years and you’re carrying a lot of extra pounds, you can’t start training for a
marathon right away. Likewise, if you’re already reasonably fit, but want to aim for specific results like
bulking, toning or training for that marathon, your personal trainer can help you to create a fitness plan
that can get you there.
Your personal trainer might also recommend specialized equipment or types of exercise, based on your
unique situation. This might include specific injuries or needing to work out at home because of your
work or family commitments.
3. Supervise Workouts
Often, personal trainers are available when you are working out. They will supervise your workouts,
show you how to do new exercises safely, without hurting yourself, and help to keep you focused and
motivated,
They will also remind you when it’s time to have a water break to stay hydrated, and if you are making
any mistakes when you’re doing specific exercises.
4. Measure Progress
Personal trainers don’t simply give you a plan and disappear. They will check in regularly to see how you
are progressing, and adjust your workout plans as needed. This includes increasing the intensity of
workouts when you find them too easy, giving you advice about better eating habits, or suggesting new
exercises to reach specific goals.
5. Keep You Focused and Motivated
Most people who start working out will eventually find that they look forward to their exercise sessions.
But it takes time to get there, and most people fail because they just can’t motivate themselves when
they need to.
Personal trainers are a little like personal cheerleaders. They will help you to stay focused on your
fitness goals and give you a nudge when you’re thinking of skipping a workout that you really should do.
Having a personal trainer takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process of getting fitter and healthier.
They can work with clients of all fitness levels and work around any existing health conditions or injuries.
So if you want to get fit and you don’t know where to start, this might be the first step!
